VERY quiet, but still disappointing
By Richard J. Plevin
We replaced a roaring Broan fan in our new (100 yr old) home with this Panasonic (bought elsewhere since Amazon didn't have the lowest price, which in my experience is unusual.) The fan is indeed extremely quiet. That's the good news. What I really wanted was a fan with just a humidity sensor since my primary objective was to prevent mold and mildew. I liked the low energy consumption and noise level of the Panasonic Whisper line, and this is their only model with a humidistat. I figured the motion detector would be useful to handle the usual malodorous situations. It's been only a week, but I have not been able to find a humidistat setting that both stays on long enough after showering to clear the moisture and doesn't turn on for no apparent reason in the middle of the night. (The unit is supposed to turn on only for a "rapid rise" in RH, which I'm quite sure isn't happening at 3am.)To prevent the fan from running at night, the RH setting needs to be at the maximum value of 80% RH. However, at that setting, the fan turns off when the bathroom RH is still over 60% according to my Radio Shack hygrometer. So to completely clear the moisture after a shower, we need to set the timer to stay on for at least 10 minutes. I'm still experimenting with that setting. The motion sensor is also a disappointment. The unit has a bright green LED that turns on whenever the sensor detects motion. This is useless information for me as a user. It would actually be useful if the light were on when the fan was running, since the light is bright enough to serve as a nightlight. But instead what you get at night is a constant blinking on and off like a neon sign. And there's no way to disable it.Between the lame RH sensor and the annoying blinking, I'm pretty disappointed with the unit. If the electrician hadn't tossed the box and extra mounting hardware, I'd return it and get a simpler fan (perhaps a Panasonic, since the fan part is great) and install a switchplate RH sensor.-Rich

Does the job
By Tim C. Ziesmer
This fan is for retrofits. It is better to have a switchable fan, but it's not always possible to run a wire down the wall to a switch (without tearing out the wall), hence the need for this. What a great idea. The fan is great, fairly quiet and does the job. The humidity sensor is adjustable from 30-90%, and the motion sensor (I wish it had adjustable sensitivity) timer adjusts from 30 min down to 30 seconds. Green light doesn't bother me. If it is at all possible in your situation to get a simple switchable fan instead of automatic, get the simple one instead of automatic like this.I though it was defective. The Panasonic help phone line is tough to navigate through (aren't they all), and I keep getting transferred to the technical department, and then getting a message that they can't answer now due to "technical issues". This seems ironic. Third time calling: now on interminable hold...Ok, took 22 minutes wait time. Person nice and helpful. Have to send receipt and wait for call from another department. We'll see what happens. Update: got call from real tech person, very helpful. Then my humility: the fan works fine, my problem was lack of understanding. If you want it off most of the time, set the humidity sensor at max (duh). So I am back to recommending this product.p.s. I think every CEO should have to navigate their company's phone system to get to a real person at least every 6 months.

No surprises
By RR69
Fan was expected level of difficulty to install in a retrofit situation. Socket and plug to connect wiring pigtail was handy. Unit appears to be well built. Everything on unit functions as advertised, and the fan is very quiet. Only complaint is that the cover is molded plastic and isn't perfectly flat, so it doesn't sit really tight against the ceiling. I plan to purchase another for a different bathroom.
