Over the years I've owned my share of ladders, including various fixed height step ladders, an extension ladder, a fold up ladder, and a Little Giant adjustable (17' model). I decided to buy a Select Step because the adjustable Little Giant I own has proven itself to be superior for my exterior step ladder needs, precisely because it is easily reconfigured. I don't get it out as often as I might because at 49lbs it is quite heavy, a weight level Little Giant has been able to bring down do a more manageable 27lbs for the Select Step. That's still pretty heavy, but then this is a very solid, adjustable step ladder that puts you as high as 6' off the floor safely.Here are other contrasts:1. My 17' model provides about 18" more height and is two sided (you can climb either side), making it more useful for outdoor step ladder uses (NOTE: as a 17' straight ladder it is lousy ... almost any extension ladder is superior).2. The 17' model is more rugged, although both models have the same 300 lb weight capacity. My 17' has been subjected to use by workmen I've hired and has survived unscathed, but I don't think the Select Step would do as well under the kind of abuses typical workmen would likely subject it to (the plastic elements that make it more home user friendly are exactly the kind of things that would get clobbered when knocked around by the typical workman).3. Both models are easily adjusted, each with its own version of spring loaded pin locks to hold the moving parts together securely. The 4 pin locks on the 17' model have to be pulled, whereas for the Select Step you use a twist handle and push rockers, a bit slicker but possibly more easily damaged strategy given the plastic construction employed (I haven't had any trouble in this regard, just an observation).4. Both models have wheels positioned to assist in moving them when they are folded up (so long as you are on a paved surface), a concession to their heavy nature.5. Either side of the 17' model can be adjusted for use on stairs or to get you closer to a wall; for the Easy Step this has to be the "non-step" side, which renders the "Air Deck" tray useless since it then tilts down (and the reason I've rated the Easy Step 4 stars instead of 5 ... I don't think it would be terribly difficult to come up with a design that did not have this flaw).6. Both models have "spread" legs at the base to increase overall stability, an important safety factor.7. The 17' model comes with a moderately useful work platform that fits over its rungs (and which, incidentally, also works with the Select Step); the Select Step comes with a self-storing plastic tray that is nicely designed for added ladder functionality, although far too flimsy to handle a load more than a few pounds.8. Both models collapse down to a manageable size for bringing inside, particularly for getting them past tight entrance ways, say to a stair well (which is where is it really nice to be dealing with the 27lb package of the Select Step rather than the 49lb of the 17' model).Overall, the Select Step is a superior, and yes pricey, step ladder solution, but one that is very well designed and one that I've decided is worth it because it covers my critical range of step ladder needs between 6 and 12 feet at a weight level I can comfortably handle in tight quarters. Note it is not a good choice for electrical work since it is mostly constructed of aluminum.

.This is exactly like the "5 to 8 foot" Little Giant 15125-001, but taller (2 extra rungs).If you spend lots of time on step ladders, this high-priced "Select Step" series is probably worth it. It's loaded with thoughtful design, most of which truly improves life on a step ladder. It's very solid and stable. Comfortable, versatile, tough. The top handle & work deck are very useful.If it's for occasional use, you could be better off with a multipurpose ladder (step ladder and extension ladder in one). Or just a cheaper, lighter step ladder. If you want to pay extra for a very safe-feeling feature-rich ladder, you'll like this a lot.- - - Maximum Heights for the Two Models - - -Smaller . . .If you spend lots of time on step ladders, this boldly priced model is probably worth it. It's loaded with thoughtful design, most of which truly improves life on a step ladder. It's very solid and stable. Comfortable, versatile, tough. The top handle & work deck are very useful.For a homeowner who's going to spend 2 hours a year on it...it depends. You could be better off with a multipurpose ladder (step ladder and extension ladder in one). Or just a cheaper, lighter step ladder. If you want to pay extra for a very safe-feeling feature-rich ladder, you'll like this a lot.- - - Some Corrections - - -1. Height: The maximum step height is 67.8", not higher (see Note 1 for more height details)2. Stabilizer bar (27.5" horizontal bar at base): It's permanently attached. Photos showing the ladder without a stabilizer are not correct for the model 15125-001 that was shipped to me in June 2012. Maybe an older version did not have it.3. Weight: 26.5 lbs (not 37.9 lbs). The handle/platform weighs an additional 4.30 lbs4. As typical of step ladders, this "8-footer" only stands 7.5 feet high when in use. - - - PROs and CONs - - -PROs: * Very solid & stable * Adjustable height: 4.7 to 7.5ft - Good reach: handle at 9.2 ft, hand reach = 12-13 ft - Use on staircases, etc. - Rungs are 1.75" deep (3-7/8" when doubled up).
